San Diego Area Lakes, April 13 Report

NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: Dixon Lake received a 4,500-pound plant last week, and its last plant of the season will be April 19, another 4,500-pound plant. Dixon will be closed to all fishing beginning Tuesday, April 18 at 7 p.m. and re-open at 6 a.m. on Saturday, April 22 for the 20th Annual Kiwanis Trout Derby. Jennings received 1,700 pounds of trout last week. Poway received 1,500 pounds of rainbows last week, and its final plant of the year will be April 19th — a double plant of 2,800 pounds. Wohlford received 1,500 pounds of trout last week and its final plant of the season will be April. 19. Cuyamaca will get a 1,200-pound plant this week, and another 1,200 pounds April 25. There will be two stocks in May and two more in June.
DFW trout plants this week include Chollas Park Lake, Cuyamaca Lake, Lindo Lake, and Morena Reservoir.

FISHING UPDATE: The bass fishing is generally fair to good with most fish spawning now. Lower Otay and San Vicente have been particularly good, but Murray, Wohlford, and Jennings are also pretty good. Trout also remain a good bet but trout season is winding down. Top bets for trout are Cuyamaca, Dixon, Jennings, Poway, and Wohlford. Cuyamaca is fair. The panfish bites are just starting to turn on. Very good panfish action at San Vicente and Murray with the fish moving shallow for the spawn.

FISH COUNTS: The San Diego City Lakes fish usually conducts counts each week at its reservoirs. At El Capitan, there were 11 anglers checked who reported 18 bass. At Hodges, 57 anglers reported just six bass. At Murray, 33 anglers reported two bass. At Lower Otay, 72 anglers reported 247 bass to 4.1 pounds, 169 bluegill, and 24 crappie. At Miramar, 32 anglers reported 27 bass to 4.1 pounds. At Sutherland, 10 anglers reported 14 bass. No other reports.

NOTEABLE CATCHES: At Wohlford, Roger Damian, Murrieta, landed a 6-15 rainbow on a Mouse Tail off the Senior Shoreline. At Murray, Alexis Cash, a two-year-old from Chula Vista, landed a two-pound bluegill on a nightcrawler while fishing from a pedal boat. At Poway, Rene Rodriguez, San Diego, caught a six-pound Taikwalker.
