San Diego Area Lakes, Aug. 3 Report

NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: A 1,000-pound catfish plant was slated for Lake Jennings this week, with more 1,000-pound plants slated for the weeks of Aug. 14, and Aug. 28. Dixon and Wohlford also are slated to get fish this week. Poway is slated to get 1,300 pounds this week and the week of Aug. 18.

FISHING UPDATE: While the bass action remains fair to good at most waters in the region, the bluegill and redear action is good at most lakes and probably still holds the top billing. Most are hand-sized, weighing less than a half-pound, but some bigger. Lower Otay and Hodges have been hotspots and some fish continue to weigh more than a pound. Also pretty good bluegill bites at Barrett, San Vicente, Murray, El Capitan, and Jennings. Barrett took a nosedive for bass this past week due to heat and water conditions, but Lower Otay has been fair to good with fish to four pounds reported. Morena, El Capitan, San Vicente, and Hodges also remain pretty good on bass, with topwater action most mornings and evenings, but still mostly on plastics and reaction baits. Trout season is pretty much over except at Cuyamaca, which has been OK in deeper water on floating baits and inflated nightcrawlers. Catfish season is in full swing at most waters with some good catches being reported at all the lakes.

FISH COUNTS: The San Diego City Lakes staff usually conducts counts each week at its reservoirs. At Barrett Lake, 107 anglers reported 445 bass (the worst count of the year). At Miramar, 22 anglers had 27 bass to four pounds and nine bluegill to just over a pound. At Murray, 62 anglers reported no fish. At Lower Otay, 72 anglers reported 315 bass to 4.65 pounds and 354 bluegill to 1.5 pounds. At San Vicente, 80 anglers reported 162 bass to 4.54 pounds and 25 bluegill.
