San Diego Area Lakes, Dec. 7 Report

NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: The 39th Annual Dixon Lake Trout Derby was this past weekend. It was won by Tanner Holt, Escondido, with a 7.68-pound trout, just edging girlfriend Katelyn Woods, Escondido, who had a 7.66-pound rainbow. Dixon plants from Calaveras Trout Farms were made on Nov. 15 (4,500 pounds), Nov. 22 (1,500 pounds), Nov. 29 (4,000 pounds) and Dec. 1 (2,000 pounds), and the next plant of 1,500 pounds is slated for Dec. 13.

Lake Jennings received 1,500 pounds of trout two weeks ago, and 2,500 pounds three weeks ago. It will also have plants of 1,500 pounds, the weeks of Dec. 18, Jan. 1, Jan. 15, Jan. 29, Feb. 5, Feb. 19, Feb. 26, Mar. 19, Apr. 2, and Apr. 16. The Jan. 29 and Apr. 2 plants will be 1,700 pounds.

Poway Lakes trout season kicked off with the first plant of the season last week. There will also be plants Dec. 13 and 28, Jan. 10, 24, and 31, Feb. 21, Mar. 7 and 21, and April 4 and 18. The Youth Fish Derby is set for Feb. 3.

Santee Lakes trout season kicked off three weeks ago with a plant of 2,500 pounds of rainbows, and there was a 1,000-pound plant last week. Additional 1,000-pound plants are also slated for Dec. 13, Dec. 29, Jan. 13, Jan. 24, Feb. 7, Feb. 21, and Mar. 7.

Lake Cuyamaca is slated to get 1,200 pounds of Jess Ranch trout Dec. 19. Future plants from Jess Ranch or Wright’s Rainbows are Dec. 28, Jan. 9, Jan. 25, Feb. 6, Feb. 15, Mar. 13, Mar. 29, Apr. 19, May 22, and Jun. 15. Duck hunting season starts this week, restricting anglers to the north shoreline from the dam to the handicap dock all day on Wednesdays and until 10 a.m. on Sundays.

At Wohlford, the lake/park is currently closed on weekdays, but it will reopen to fishing seven days a week beginning Dec. 9 following its first trout plant.

At the San Diego City Lakes, Hodges, Barrett and Sutherland are closed for the season. El Capitan’s boat rental is closed for the season. ‘Cap and San Vicente are on their winter schedules. DFW trout plants went into Chollas Park Lake and Cuyamaca Lake two weeks ago, but no plants have been made or are scheduled.

FISHING UPDATE: Trout season has kicked into gear, and there is good fishing at most waters now. Dixon Lake has been particularly good (but crowded) and Lake Cuyamaca is very good. Lots of limits posted at both waters. Jennings. Santee Lakes has been fair with their next plants coming next week. Poway has also been pretty fair after a plant last week and another plant next week.

The bass action is finally starting to ebb a little as the nights and water temperatures cool. Lower Otay has been the bass hotspot in the region with a lot of fish on drop-shot plastics and still some reaction bait fish. El Capitan, San Vicente have also been pretty fair bass. Lots of small fish at all the lakes right now.

The bluegill and redear action has slowed way down, with just a few fish caught at Murray, Otay, and San Vicente.

The catfish are getting very light pressure right now so there have been few reports.

FISH COUNTS: The San Diego City Lakes staff usually conducts counts each week at its reservoirs. At El Capitan, 19 anglers reported 69 bass and 12 blue catfish. At Miramar, 17 anglers reported 28 bass to 4 pounds and three channel cats to 8.5 pounds. At San Vicente, 79 anglers checked had 139 bass to 5.2 pounds.

NOTABLE CATCHES: At Murray, Daniel Ortega, San Diego, landed three bluegill to 1.5 pounds off the fishing pier on red worms, while Roger Clemens, San Diego, had a 2-pound redear off the pier on meal worms.
