San Diego Area Lakes, July 20 Report

NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: A 2,000-pound catfish plants went in at Lake Jennings this week. Dixon and Wohlford slated to get fish this week after the first plants of the season two weeks ago. Poway was planted with 2,600 pounds of catfish two weeks ago, and there will be plants of 1,300 pounds this week and the weeks of Aug. 4, and Aug. 18.

FISHING UPDATE: While the bass action remains fair to good at most waters in the region, the bluegill and redear action is good at most lakes. Lower Otay and Hodges have been hotspots and some fish continue to weigh more than a pound. Also pretty good bluegill bites at Barrett, San Vicente, Murray, El Capitan, and Jennings. Barrett remains perhaps the top bet for bass, volume wise, but Lower Otay has been excellent with fish to six pounds reported. One angler reported catching and releasing 32 bass on flukes at Otay this past week. Morena, El Capitan, San Vicente, and Hodges also remain pretty good on bass, with topwater action most mornings and evenings, but still mostly on plastics and reaction baits. Trout season is pretty much over except at Cuyamaca, which has been OK. Catfish season is in full swing at most waters with some good catches being reported at all the lakes, and there was a rumor of a 90-pound blue at San Vicente this past week. Maybe? Maybe not. Itís produced them that size in the past.

FISH COUNTS: The San Diego City Lakes staff usually conducts counts each week at its reservoirs. At El Capitan, 49 anglers reported 102 bass. At Lake Hodges, 76 angles checked had 26 bass, 25 bluegill, and 18 channel catfish. At Miramar, 43 anglers had 60 bass to 7.53 pounds, 14 bluegill to a pound, and two channel cats to five pounds. At Lower Otay, 74 anglers reported 369 bass to 6.3 pounds and 330 bluegill to 1.2 pounds.

NOTEABLE CATCHES: At Murray, Glenn Person, San Diego, landed a 5.75-pound bass on a crawdad west of the dock. Robbie Cornell and Cole McComber, both San Diego, had four bass to four pounds on purple plastic worms. Young Aurelius Powell, San Diego, landed a 2.5-pound bluegill from Del Cerro Bay on a red worm.
