San Diego Area Lakes, June 15 Report

NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: Only Lake Cuyamaca is still being stocked with private trout, and received private trout last week week. It was also planted with DFW trout last week, along with Doane Pond and Morena Reservoir.

FISHING UPDATE: While the bass action remains fair to good at most waters in the region, the bluegill and redear action is good to excellent at most lakes. Lower Otay Reservoir has been a hotspot with anglers posting 25-fish limits again this past week. Many are topping a pound. Also good bluegill bites at Barrett, San Vicente, Murray, and Jennings. Barrett remains perhaps the top bet for bass, but Morena, Lower Otay, El Capitan, and San Vicente also remain pretty good on bass, mostly on plastics and reaction baits. Many fish are being reported on topwater now. Trout season is winding down, but there continues to be some good action at Cuyamaca, Morena (both received DFW trout plants last week). Jennings is also pretty fair. Most of the bites are in deeper water as the surface temperatures warm up. Catfish season is starting to kick off with some good catches starting to be reported, and Jennings has night fishing on weekends. The catfish stocking schedule is on the Jennings’ website (, with fish slated to go in this week.

FISH COUNTS: The San Diego City Lakes staff usually conducts counts each week at its reservoirs. This past week, 228 anglers at Barrett landed 2,173 bass and 40 bluegill.
