San Diego Area Lakes, June 21 Report

NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: Lake Cuyamaca was planted with private trout last week and four weeks ago. Last week’s stock was the final trout plant of the 2017-18 season. Plants will resume in September.

Santee Lakes has had catfish plants since April 7. There was a plant last week, and the next 1,000-pound plants will be June 29, July 6, 13, 27, Aug. 3, 10, 24, 31, Sept. 7, 21, 29, and a final plant Oct. 6 (3,500 pounds).

Lake Jennings catfish plants began in May, and there was a 1,000-pound Monday this week. There will also be plants the weeks of July 2, July 9, July 16, July 30, August 13, and August 27.

Wohlford Lake was planted with 750 pounds of catfish May 25 and again June 8. The next plant — 1,000 pounds — is set for July 3.

At Poway, catfish season doesn’t begin until the end of July. No word yet on Dixon Lake catfish season.

FISHING UPDATE: The bass bite has been fair to good across the board with the warm weather with some decent topwater action early and late in the day. There are a lot of small bass showing at all the lakes, but there is still a pretty good bite on bigger fish in deeper water on small plastics and reaction baits. Lower Otay, San Vicente, El Capitan, and Sutherland are the top bets with good action, while Hodges and Murray are slow to fair. Miramar is fair, but most of the fish are small. Barrett, while decent, is surprisingly slow compared to its normal blazing pace.

The bluegill and redear action is good most places, especially at Lower Otay, San Vicente, and Hodges. El Capitan and Sutherland are a tick behind those, but also pretty decent. The crappie action has really dropped off with very few fish reported at any of the lakes over the past week except for El Capitan and Sutherland, and not many at those two.

The trout bite had slowed way down except at Cuyamaca, which received both state and private fish four weeks ago and its land plant of the season last week.

The catfish are still getting very light pressure, but there is a pretty good bite at Santee Lakes, and most of the other lakes planting fish.

FISH COUNTS: The San Diego City Lakes staff usually conducts counts each week at its reservoirs. At Barrett, 120 anglers checked reported 325 bass and 110 bluegill. At El Capitan, there were 76 anglers who landed 341 bass, 47 bluegill, 16 crappie, and three blue catfish. At Hodges, 108 anglers caught 59 bass, 82 bluegill, and 11 channel catfish. At Miramar, 39 anglers reported 73 bass to 4.2 pounds. At Murray, 34 anglers had 40 bluegill. At Lower Otay, 63 anglers checked reported 406 bass to 5.7 pounds and 366 bluegill to 1.5 pounds. At San Vicente, 51 anglers caught 122 bass to 6.5 pounds and 90 bluegill. At Sutherland, 37 anglers landed 79 bass, 33 bluegill, and six crappie.
