San Diego Area Lakes, June 22 Report

NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: Only Lake Cuyamaca is still being stocked with private trout, and its last plant of the season will go in next week. There was also a plant last week. It was also planted with DFW trout this week, along with Doane Pond and Morena Reservoir. Catfish plants went in at Lake Jennings this week. Dixon and Wohlford will get their first catfish plants of the season the first full week of July. Poway will be planted with 2,600 pounds of catfish July 7, and then there will be plants of 1,300 pounds the weeks of July 21, Aug. 4, and Aug. 18.

FISHING UPDATE: While the bass action remains fair to good at most waters in the region, the bluegill and redear action is good to excellent at most lakes. Lower Otay and Hodges have been hotspots with anglers posting 25-fish limits at both waters. Some are topping a pound but most are hand-sized. Also pretty good bluegill bites at Barrett, San Vicente, Murray, and Jennings. Barrett remains perhaps the top bet for bass, volume wise, but Morena, Lower Otay, El Capitan, San Vicente, and Hodges also remain pretty good on bass, with more topwater this week, but still mostly on plastics and reaction baits. Trout season is winding down, but there continues to be some very good action at Cuyamaca, with a slow to fair bite at Morena (both received DFW trout plants last week). Most of the bites are in deeper water as the surface temperatures warm up. Catfish season is starting to kick off with some good catches starting to be reported, and Jennings has night fishing on weekends.

FISH COUNTS: The San Diego City Lakes staff usually conducts counts each week at its reservoirs. This past week, 200 anglers at Barrett landed 1,312 bass and 25 bluegill.
