DFW trout plants went in three weeks ago at Chollas Park Lake, Cuyamaca Lake, and Lake Murray.

FISHING UPDATE: The trout bite has been fair to good at most of the lakes getting regular stocks now. The bite is best the two to three days after the plants, but all the lakes have had enough plants that there is a pretty good stockpile of fish that keeps the bite pretty fair. The usual array of floating dough baits, Mice Tails, and small trout jigs are the best bets. Dixon and Jennings probably have been the best bets this past week, but Wohlford and Cuyamaca have also been good. Poway, Jennings, and Santee Lakes have been fair to good.

The bass bite has really started to improve in spite of the weather with a lot of fish nosing up into the shallows for the coming spawn. Lots of fish on small plastics and big reaction baits (especially in waters planted with trout). Lower Otay, El Capitan, San Vicente, and Murray have all been fair with the Otay bite really starting to take off.

The bluegill and redear action has slowed way down with almost no reports over the past week, but the crappie action is really starting to take off at Lower Otay and Hodges, with a few fish showing at Murray.

The catfish are getting very light pressure right now so there have been few reports. However, big blue cats were reported/rumored at Otay (63.4 pounds) and Vicente (50-plus pounder lost).

FISH COUNTS: The San Diego City Lakes staff usually conducts counts each week at its reservoirs. At El Capitan, 28 anglers checked reported 143 bass, 16 bluegill, seven blue catfish, four crappie, and two channel cats. At Hodges, 45 anglers checked reported 51 crappie and 36 bass. At Lower Otay, 90 anglers reported 533 bass to 6.49 pounds, 188 crappie, 58 bluegill, and one 63.4-pound blue catfish. At San Vicente, 58 anglers reported 120 bass and three crappie.

NOTABLE CATCHES: At Otay, Kevin Ferris reported catching and releasing 16 bass, including four at 4 pounds or a little better, all on drop-shot plastics.
