NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: Poway received trout this week and two weeks ago. Dixon Lake was slated to receive a 1,500-pound plant this week. Wohlford is also scheduled to get 1,500 pounds of rainbows this week. Jennings will get 1,500 pounds this week and each of the next two weeks. Its last plant was three weeks ago. Both Dixon and Wohlford were planted last on March 8. Poway received a plant of trophy trout last week, and its next plant will be 1,500 pound March 29. The final plant of the year at Poway will be April 19th — a double plant of 2,800 pounds. Two weeks ago, Cuyamaca was planted with 1,200 pounds and Morena received 1,000 pounds of Jess Ranch rainbows.
DFW trout plants for last week included Chollas Park Lake, Cuyamaca Lake, Lindo Lake and Morena Reservoir. No plant this week, but those four waters are slated to get DFW fish again next week.
FISHING UPDATE: The bass fishing is breaking wide open with the warm weather as the fish move shallow for the coming spawn. There has been a major movement of fish on all of the county’s lakes. Lower Otay has been particularly good, but San Vicente, Murray, and Jennings are also really turning on. Even with the uptick in bass fishing, trout remain a good bet with many lakes getting weekly stocks or plants alternating weeks. Top bets for trout are Dixon, Jennings, Poway and Wohlford. Cuyamaca is fair. The panfish bites are just starting to improve with Murray probably the best bet with a pretty good bluegill bite, but the fish are still in deeper water.
FISH COUNTS: The San Diego City Lakes fish counts were not available this week.
NOTEABLE CATCHES: At Cuyamaca, Joseph Woof, Lakeside, had three rainbows for a total weight of 19.75 pounds, and his big fish was a 9-8 rainbow. Tim Self, Descanso, had a six-pound trout. At Poway, Randy and Elias Hanley, Poway, teamed up to landed seven-pound trout off the fishing pier. At Murray, Malcolm Argola, San Diego, caught and released 11 bass to six pounds on jigs.
