‘Cap and San Vicente are on their winter schedules.
There were DFW trout plant at Lake Jennings this week, and trout were planted at Chollas Park Lake, Cuyamaca Lake, and Lake Murray last week.
FISHING UPDATE: The trout bite has been fair to good at most of the lakes getting regular stocks. The bite is best the two to three days after the plants, but all the lakes have had enough plants that there is a pretty good stockpile of fish that keeps the bite pretty fair. The usual array of floating dough baits, Mice Tails, and small trout jigs are the best bets. Poway, Dixon, and Jennings are probably the bets this past week, but Wohlford is also pretty good with a plant this week. Cuyamaca and Santee Lakes have been fair.
The bass bite has really started to improve with the warm weather with the fish in a major pre-spawn movement and bite. At the warmer, lowest elevation lake, the fish are already moving shallow for the spawn. Lots of fish on small plastics and reaction baits. Lower Otay, San Vicente, and El Capitan are the top bets with very good action, but Sutherland is also turning on. Murray and Hodges are several notches behind but improving with each sunny day.
The bluegill and redear action has mostly been slow, but it is showing signs of life with more fish starting to show at Lower Otay, El Capitan, and Hodges this week. The crappie action has been fair to good at Lower Otay, and a few fish are showing at San Vicente, El Capitan, Hodges, and Murray.
The catfish are getting very light pressure right now so there have been few reports.
FISH COUNTS: The San Diego City Lakes staff usually conducts counts each week at its reservoirs. At El Capitan, 30 anglers reported 195 bass to five pounds, 11 bluegill, six crappie, three blue catfish to 31.8 pounds and two channel catfish. At Lower Otay, 74 anglers reported 740 bass to 5.5 pounds, 149 crappie to 2.2 pounds, 57 bluegill to 1 pound, and one redear sunfish. At San Vicente, 150 anglers reported 520 bass to 6.79 pounds, two redear, and one bluegill. At Sutherland, 41 anglers reported 166 bass, 15 bluegill, and five crappie.
