San Diego Area Lakes, May 10 Report

NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: Lake Cuyamaca is slated to get trout plants May 22 and Jun. 15, and it was planted two weeks ago.
Santee Lakes has had catfish plants every two weeks since April 7. The next 1,000-pound plants will be this Friday, May 25, June 1, 8, 15, 29, July 6, 13, 27, Aug. 3, 10, 24, 31, Sept. 7, 21, 29, and a final plant Oct. 6 (3,500 pounds).

Lake Jennings catfish plants will begin the week of Memorial Day weekend. At Poway, catfish season doesn’t begin until the end of July. No word yet on Dixon Lake catfish season.

At the San Diego City Lakes, Barrett is still closed for the season, but should be opening soon. Lake Jennings catfish season begins Memorial Day weekend with plants that week.

FISHING UPDATE: The bass bite has been fair to good across the board with the warm weather with the topwater action starting now. The bite is still best on small plastics and reaction baits. Lower Otay, San Vicente, and El Capitan are the top bets with very good action, but Sutherland is nearly as good. Murray and Hodges are several notches behind but also pretty decent for anglers targeting the bass.

The bluegill and redear action is kicking into high gear, especially at Lower Otay, but also at San Vicente, El Capitan, and Sutherland. Hodges is also starting to perk. The crappie action has really dropped off with very few fish reported at any of the lakes over the past week except Hodges.

The trout bite had slowed way down except at Cuyamaca, with no plants in a couple of weeks at most urban lakes.

The catfish are still getting very light pressure right now so there have been few reports.
