San Diego Area Lakes, May 24 Report

NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: Lake Cuyamaca was planted with both private and DFW trout this week. It is also scheduled to get more fish Jun. 15.

Santee Lakes has had catfish plants every two weeks since April 7. The next 1,000-pound plants will be May 25, June 1, 8, 15, 29, July 6, 13, 27, Aug. 3, 10, 24, 31, Sept. 7, 21, 29, and a final plant Oct. 6 (3,500 pounds).

Lake Jennings catfish plants will begin the week of Memorial Day weekend with a 2,000-pound plant. The lake will be open until midnight Friday through Sunday that weekend. Lanterns are required for anglers after 8 p.m. At Poway, catfish season doesn’t begin until the end of July. No word yet on Dixon Lake catfish season.

FISHING UPDATE: The bass bite has been fair to good across the board with the warm weather with the topwater action starting now. There are a lot of small bass showing at all the lakes, but there is still a pretty good bite on bigger fish in deeper water on small plastics and reaction baits. Lower Otay, San Vicente, and El Capitan are the top bets with very good action, but Sutherland and Hodges are nearly as good. Barrett, while decent, is surprisingly slow compared to its normal blazing pace.

The bluegill and redear action is kicking into high gear, especially at Lower Otay, but also at San Vicente, El Capitan, Hodges, and Sutherland. The crappie action has really dropped off with very few fish reported at any of the lakes over the past week except for El Capitan and Lower Otay.

The trout bite had slowed way down except at Cuyamaca, which received both state and private fish this week.

The catfish are still getting very light pressure, but there is a pretty good bite at Santee Lakes.

FISH COUNTS: The San Diego City Lakes staff usually conducts counts each week at its reservoirs. At Barrett, 266 anglers reported 692 bass. At El Capitan, 96 anglers landed 386 bass to 9.56 pounds, 37 bluegill, 14 blue catfish, and 10 crappie. At Nodges, there were 69 anglers who landed 54 bass and 37 bluegill.
