San Diego Area Lakes, Nov. 16 Report

NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: Trout plant season is starting to move into full swing. Santee Lakes trout season kicked off last week with a plant of 2,500 pounds of rainbows. Dixon Lake’s trout season kicked off Wednesday this week with the first plant of the season. The annual Dixon derby will run from Dec. 1-3 (Friday through Sunday) with a trophy fish plant just before the event. The lake will be closed No. 29-30 before the event. Cuyamaca received two plants in September and one in October. These are the last plants until late November, when twice-monthly private plants start, along with plants of DFW fish. At Wohlford, the lake/park is currently closed on weekdays, but it will reopen to fishing seven days a week beginning Dec. 9 following its first trout plant. Hodges, Barrett and Sutherland are closed for the season. El Capitan’s boat rental is closed for the season. ‘Cap and San Vicente are on their winter schedules.

FISHING UPDATE: The bass action is finally starting to ebb a little as the nights and water temperatures cool, but overall the bite is still pretty good with a lot of fish still up on the surface chasing baitfish. The best action continues to be on reaction baits, topwater, and plastics. El Capitan, San Vicente, and Lower Otay are the best bets. Lots of small fish at all the lakes right now. The bluegill and redear action is also slowing with just fair action at Otay, Murray, and San Vicente. Most are hand-sized, weighing less than a half-pound, but some bigger to a pound or better. The fish mostly seem to be in 15 to 30 feet of water at all the lakes. Trout fishing is getting better by the day at Cuyamaca with the Lone Pine Tree the spot for pan-sized trout, and plants last week at Santee Lakes made the bite there pretty good.

FISH COUNTS: The San Diego City Lakes staff usually conducts counts each week at its reservoirs. None available this week.

NOTEABLE CATCHES: At Lake Murray, Carl Smith, San Diego, landed an 8-pound largemouth on a swimbait, while Alfonso Gomez, Chula Vista, had seven bluegill to 1.5 pounds on red worms off the fishing pier.
