San Diego Area Lakes, Nov. 2 Report

NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: Trout plants won’t begin until November or December at most waters, but Cuyamaca received two plants in September, and it got a plant of 1,500 pounds of fish from Wright’s rainbows three weeks ago. This is the last plant until late November, when twice-monthly private plants start, along with plants of DFW fish. At Wohlford, the lake/park is currently closed on weekdays, but it will reopen to fishing seven days a week beginning Dec. 9 following its first trout plant. Barrett and Sutherland are closed for the season, and Hodges closes Sunday, Oct. 29. El Capitan’s boat rental closes for the season Sunday (Oct. 29), and it and San Vicente switch to their winter schedule.

FISHING UPDATE: The bass action remains very good to excellent at most waters still open. The best action has been on reaction baits, topwater, and plastics. El Capitan, San Vicente, and Lower Otay are the best bets. Lots of small fish at all the lakes right now, but the fish are mostly schooled up chasing baitfish. Many anglers are reporting 20 to 40 fish days. The bluegill and redear action is also picking up as waters cool, with fair to good action at Otay, Murray, and San Vicente. Most are hand-sized, weighing less than a half-pound, but some bigger to a pound or better. The fish mostly seem to be in 12 to 25 feet of water at all the lakes and pretty tight to brush, tules, or weed beds. Trout fishing is on the upswing at Cuyamaca but warm weather has stalled this bite a little.

FISH COUNTS: The San Diego City Lakes staff usually conducts counts each week at its reservoirs. This past week, there were 16 anglers checked at Miramar and they reported 45 bass to 4.05 pounds. At Murray, 36 anglers reported two bass. At Lower Otay, 52 anglers landed 263 bass to 4.2 pounds and 76 bluegill to 1.1 pound. At San Vicente, 55 anglers landed 99 bass to three pounds and 10 bluegill.
