FISHING UPDATE: Trout season has kicked into gear, and there is good fishing at most waters now. Lake Cuyamaca was wide open over the holiday weekend with a lot of limits posted, but there is also good action at Dixon (39th trout derby this weekend) and Jennings. Santee Lakes has been fair, and the season is kicking off at Poway this week.

The bass action is finally starting to ebb a little as the nights and water temperatures cool, but overall the bite is still pretty good. Less surface bass chasing baitfish, but the bite on drop-shot plastics in deeper water has improved. El Capitan, San Vicente, and Lower Otay are the best bets. Lots of small fish at all the lakes right now.

The bluegill and redear action is also slowing with just slow to fair action at Otay, Murray, and San Vicente. Most are hand-sized, weighing less than a half-pound, but some bigger to a pound or better. The fish mostly seem to be in 15 to 30 feet of water at all the lakes.

The catfish are getting very light pressure right now so there have been few reports, but this is traditionally a good time of the year to get a big blue or a stringer of quality cats. Otay proved that this week (see “notable catches” below).

FISH COUNTS: The San Diego City Lakes staff usually conducts counts each week at its reservoirs. None available this week.

NOTABLE CATCHES: At Lower Otay, Thomas Greer, El Cajon, had a three-catfish stringer that weighed 62.48 pounds, and his top fish was a 36.46-pounder. All were caught on mackerel in Bushlow Cove. At Santee Lakes, a 6-10 rainbow was caught by John Gaerin, Santee, on green PowerBait. At Murray, Michelle Conroy, San Diego, landed a two-pound bluegill on a red worms off the fishing pier.
