San Diego Area Lakes, Oct. 5 Report

NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: Catfish stocking season is over. Trout plants won’t begin until November or December at most waters, but Cuyamaca received two plants in September, and it is slated to get 1,500 pounds of fish from Wright’s rainbows this week. This is the last plant until late November, when twice-monthly private plants start, along with plants of DFW fish. At Wohlford, the lake/park is currently closed on weekdays. It will remain open on weekends, and it will re-open for weekday fishing in December with the opening of trout season.

FISHING UPDATE: The bass action is picking up at most waters, with a pretty good bite on reaction baits and plastics. Also still a lot of topwater early in the day. Lower Otay, El Capitan, and San Vicente have been the best bets with pretty good action on topwater and reaction baits, but Sutherland and Hodges also have improved with fair to good action. Lots of small fish at all the lakes right now. The bluegill and redear action is also picking up as waters cool, with fair to good action at Otay, Hodges, El Capitan, Jennings, Murray, and San Vicente. Most are hand-sized, weighing less than a half-pound, but some bigger. The fish mostly seem to be in 12 to 25 feet of water at all the lakes and pretty tight to brush, tules, or weed beds. Trout fishing is on the upswing at Cuyamaca as the nights cool.
